
A vegetable-tanned hide looks worse the day you buy it than it will in five years. A PU leather product looks its best on the day you buy it and rarely again after that. Neither of those is a flaw. They are two materials built to do different jobs, and the comparison only gets useful once that is admitted honestly, rather than treated as one side simply beating the other.
One thing this piece is not doing: settling whether it is right to use animal materials at all. That is a real and serious question, and it deserves to be argued on its own terms, not folded into a comparison of material performance. What follows here is narrower and more specific, how vegetable-tanned leather and PU leather actually perform over the life of an object, nothing more and nothing less. A reader who has already reached a settled position on the ethics of animal materials will not find that position addressed here, in either direction.
Polyurethane leather exists because it solves real problems that real buyers have. It is consistent from one sheet to the next in a way natural hide can never be, since it is manufactured rather than grown. It costs a fraction of leather to produce. It does not require an animal, which matters to a meaningful and growing number of buyers on principle, not preference. And it performs well in specific technical applications, car interiors in particular, where uniform texture, colour consistency, and resistance to the kind of temperature swings a dashboard experiences matter more than how the material ages.
That last point is worth sitting with. The synthetic leather market is worth somewhere north of 67 billion dollars this year and growing at roughly 8.5 percent annually, and PU accounts for around 62 percent of it. That is not a niche material propped up by novelty. It is doing genuine, useful work at scale, mostly in automotive interiors and fast fashion, for buyers whose priorities are cost and consistency rather than longevity. There is nothing dishonest about choosing PU for those reasons.
Vegetable tanning is a process, not a marketing term, and the process is the whole point. It uses natural tannins from tree bark, wood, and leaves rather than chromium salts, and it takes weeks for those tannins to properly penetrate the hide, sometimes longer, where chrome tanning does the same job in a single day. That slowness is not inefficiency. It is what lets the tannins bond evenly through the full thickness of the leather, which is why a properly veg-tanned hide can be skived, carved, and edge-burnished in ways a fast-tanned or synthetic material generally cannot.
The result is a firmer, denser material that starts pale, stiff at the edges, and uniform in colour, and changes with handling and light over years into something with genuine depth and character. That change is called patina, and it is not damage. It is the leather recording use. A full-grain veg-tan piece that has had a decade of daily handling looks better for it, in a way a synthetic simply cannot, because a synthetic is built to a fixed lifespan rather than an accumulating one.
The honest trade-off is real, not just PU's to bear. Veg-tan marks more easily when new, which some buyers mistake for a flaw before the leather has had a chance to do what it does. It is less water-resistant out of the gate than a sealed synthetic. And tanning, whichever process is used, is not environmentally weightless. Chrome tanning in particular carries its own chemical management questions, which is exactly why sourcing from tanneries with credible environmental standards, ideally connected to bodies like the Leather Working Group, matters more than the tannage label on its own.
On raw lifespan, the gap is not subtle. A quality full-grain leather piece, cared for, can reasonably last thirty years or more. PU leather typically cracks and peels within a few years of regular use, because the polymer coating that gives it its surface simply does not have the structural depth to age the way a hide does. On end of life, real leather is biodegradable on a timescale of decades, while PU, being a plastic, persists for a great deal longer than that. Neither figure is a reason to feel superior. They are simply what each material is built to do, and the honest question for a buyer is which of those two behaviours actually matches how the object will be used.
This studio works in full-grain leather, chosen from reputable tanneries, veg-tan or chrome-tan depending on what a particular commission genuinely needs. The bias toward vegetable tanning specifically, where it is used, is not because chrome-tanned leather is inferior. It is because durability and the ability to age well are usually the actual brief, and veg-tan is the tannage that delivers both. That is the same argument made throughout this Journal and it will not change piece to piece: the case for any material here is what it is built to do over a long timeline, not a claim about which side of a debate it belongs to.
