About Insignis

Insignis is a British leather studio focused on creating objects intended to improve with age.

In a world increasingly shaped by disposability, speed, and constant replacement, we believe there is still value in making fewer things, more carefully.

Every piece begins with a simple question:

Will this still be worth owning years from now?

That question influences everything that follows: material selection, construction methods, and the pace at which work is undertaken.

Material First

Every decision begins with the leather. We source hides chosen for how they age — not how they photograph on day one.

Built to Last

Nothing we make is designed to be replaced. Longevity informs every material choice, construction method, and finishing decision.

Small Batch

Capacity is deliberately limited. Fewer pieces, more carefully made. Quality cannot be rushed or scaled without compromise.

Why We Exist

Leather is one of the few materials that rewards long-term ownership.

It softens where it is handled, develops character through use, and records the passage of time in a way that few modern materials can.

Yet much of today's market is built around short-term consumption. Products are designed to be replaced rather than repaired, refreshed rather than lived with.

Insignis exists as a small response to that idea.

We create objects intended to remain useful, familiar, and personal long after they leave the workshop.

Our Approach

Three brown outlined layered shapes stacked vertically on a white background.

We believe quality begins long before a product is finished.

It starts with restraint.

Restraint in design. Restraint in production. Restraint in deciding what does not belong.

Rather than pursuing large collections or rapid releases, we focus on a limited number of carefully developed pieces.

Every detail must justify its place.

Our aim is not to create objects that demand attention, but objects that earn attachment through daily use.

Materials & Making

Materials matter.

Not simply because of how they look on day one, but because of how they behave after years of handling.

We work with carefully selected leathers chosen for their character, durability, and ability to age well. Construction methods are selected with the same philosophy in mind: longevity before convenience, substance before appearance.

Many of the most important qualities in leather goods cannot be measured immediately.

They reveal themselves slowly through time, use, and familiarity.

That is precisely what interests us.

How We Source

Leather is primarily a by-product of the food industry. Most hides come from animals raised for meat, not for their skins. This is a distinction Insignis communicates honestly, without using it as a marketing position.

When selecting leather, the focus is on suppliers and tanneries with traceable origins, responsible environmental practices, and long-standing industry standards. Structural strength, ageing characteristics, and repairability are the criteria that matter most.

Hardware, thread, and secondary materials are held to the same standard. Durability and material integrity come before convenience. Packaging is kept simple, recyclable, and responsibly sourced.

Labour matters too. Insignis does not work with suppliers associated with forced labour or exploitative working conditions. UK-based suppliers are preferred where quality and traceability standards are met.

The aim is not to make broad claims about sustainability. It is to make considered decisions and to be honest about what is known and what is still being learned.

The Founder

Brown outline of a closed envelope icon representing email or correspondence.

What began as a personal interest in traditional leathercraft developed into a deeper appreciation for materials, craftsmanship, and the role that well-made objects can play in everyday life.

The studio is built on the belief that making is about more than production. It is about understanding materials, respecting process, and creating objects that remain meaningful long after they are made.

Insignis was founded by Michael Airey.

Looking Forward

Insignis is still at the beginning of its journey.

The ambition is not to become the largest leather company.

It is to become a trusted one.

To create work with integrity. To support craftsmanship. To champion materials that improve with age. And to build objects people choose to keep.

Every sale from Insignis contributes to the Craft Legacy Initiative — a fixed financial commitment to craft education, heritage preservation, and practitioner development. It is not a donation programme. It is built into the financial structure of the business as a permanent obligation, not a discretionary one.

Because the best things rarely become valuable overnight.

They become valuable through time.
