
The saddle stitch is named for what it was built to survive, not for how it looks.
According to multiple unconfirmed sources across leathercraft and saddlery marketing content, the technique comes out of European saddlery workshops, principally English and French, and predates the industrial revolution by roughly three centuries. That claim shows up in almost identical wording across a number of unrelated blogs, with no historian, museum, or archive cited behind any of them, which is worth being upfront about rather than repeating as settled fact.
What the record actually supports is older and less tidy. Stitched leather goes back more than 12,000 years, to eyed bone needles found at Ice Age-era sites in North America. The earliest leather saddle that has been directly dated comes from a burial in northwest China dated to the mid-first millennium BCE, not from a European workshop. No documented date, location, or named origin point exists for the specific two-needle saddle stitch used today. It is a genuinely old technique, but exactly how old, and where it was first used in this form, is not something the historical record settles.
Harness makers and bridle craftsmen, wherever and whenever the technique reached them, were not stitching handbags. They were stitching tack that had to hold a rider onto a horse at full gallop, and a seam that gave way at speed was not a returns problem, it was a safety problem.
In England, one part of this history is well documented. A guild of saddlers is thought to trace to an Anglo-Saxon craft fellowship active by the eleventh century, though the Worshipful Company of Saddlers' own historical records note there is no longer positive evidence for that claim. What is on record is a Royal Charter granted to the Company by Edward III in 1363. This was not a decorative craft. It was infrastructure, and it was treated with the seriousness that implies.
The method itself has not changed much since then, which is unusual for anything six or seven hundred years old. An awl or pricking iron marks and pierces the holes along the seam. A single length of thread, waxed and once linen, now more commonly polyester, runs through with a needle fixed at each end. Both needles pass through the same hole from opposite sides, crossing inside the leather to form an X, and the thread is pulled tight by hand, one stitch at a time. There is no machine equivalent to this crossing. A lockstitch machine, which is what almost all modern stitching is, threads one continuous line from the top and interlocks it with a second continuous line from below.
That difference in construction is the entire point, and it is worth being precise about why, because hand-stitched on its own does not explain anything.
A lockstitch seam depends on continuous tension along its full length. Cut or wear through it at any single point and the seam can unravel in both directions from that point, because the two threads are only held by each other's tension along the run. A saddle-stitched seam does not share that weakness. Because each stitch is locked independently by its own crossing, a break at one point stays at that point. The stitches on either side hold. Waxed thread still wears, and UV and abrasion will degrade it over years like any material, so saddle stitch is not indestructible. What it is, is contained. A failure stays local instead of spreading, which in practice means a repair instead of a seam coming apart along an entire panel.
Sewing machines have been able to stitch a seam in a fraction of the time a saddle stitch takes for close to two centuries now, and the saddle stitch is still here regardless. That is worth sitting with. It is not survival by nostalgia. Saddlery, bookbinding, military kit, and luggage meant to be used hard for decades all kept the technique for the same reason the original saddlers used it: it fails the way you want something to fail when the alternative is genuinely dangerous or genuinely expensive to replace.
A machine finishes a seam on a wallet in under a minute. Doing the same seam by hand, saddle stitched, takes the better part of an hour. The two seams look identical on the day they are finished. The difference shows up later, at the point where one of them starts to give and the other does not.
Every seam on an Insignis commission is saddle stitched by hand, for exactly the reason above and no other. It is not presented here as a heritage flourish. It is a specification choice, the same as choosing a particular tannery or a particular weight of leather, made because the object is meant to be used for a long time and the stitching has to be able to keep up with that intention.
Slower work of this kind does not scale the way most businesses want to scale. It scales in the other direction: fewer pieces, more attention on each one. That trade is built into how the studio operates, not worked around.
